GUILFORD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
REGULAR MEETING
GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA

Thursday, January 29, 2004

The Board of Education met in a special called meeting at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2004, to dialogue with the Andrews High School Leadership Team. The meeting was held at 712 North Eugene Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. The following Board members were present: Kris Cooke, Alan Duncan, Darlene Garrett, Johnny Hodge, Dot Kearns (arrived at 7:40 a.m.), Susan Mendenhall, Nancy Routh, Anita Sharpe, and Marti Sykes. Board members Garry Burnett and Deena Hayes were absent. Also present were Superintendent Terry Grier and Attorney Jill Wilson.

Call to Order

Chairman Duncan called the meeting to order at 7:34 a.m.

Pledge of Allegiance and Moment of Silence

Board member Anita Sharpe led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a Moment of Silence.

Dialogue with Andrews High School's Leadership Team

Chairman Duncan opened the floor to Cassandra Barker-Carr, Principal of Andrews High School, and members of the school's leadership team and guests. Principal Carr and speakers discussed their concerns relating to the issue of American Indians as mascots in the school district.

The Board will further discuss American Indian mascots at its January 29 Regular Meeting.

Adjournment

With no further business, at 8:26 a.m., motion was made by Anita Sharpe, seconded by Kris Cooke, to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed upon unanimous voice vote.
