Valerie Akins is a leader who empowers others and leads by example. “My philosophy and vision are only as strong as my ability to model it to my parents and staff,” said Valerie. “I must walk the walk and talk the talk.” Valerie was recognized at the Wachovia Best in Class Awards program on September 26 for her passion and dedication to educational leadership when she was announced not only as the district’s elementary Principal of the Year, but also as the overall Principal of the Year. As the district’s 2006-07 overall winner of Principal of the Year, Valerie received $1,000 from Wachovia and $500 as the elementary level winner.

Other principals receiving awards include Revonda Johnson from High Point Central High. She received $500 for being the secondary schools winner. The remaining finalists, Darcy Kemp from Morehead Elementary, Dr. Grenita Lathan from Washington Elementary and Pam Misher from Pearce Elementary (former principal at Alderman Elementary) received $300 each from Wachovia Bank.

Additionally, Valerie will have her choice of $2,000 to attend an educational conference or a gift card combination to Harris Teeter Neighborhood Markets ($1,000) and Friendly Shopping Center ($1,000).  Each of the Principal of the Year finalists will also receive a $500 gift card to Harris Teeter.
