RE:

Approval of the Proposed 2008-09 Academic Calendar

Pursuant to direction provided by the board during its October 24, 2007 meeting, public comment was received regarding the proposed 2008-09 school calendar.

A total of 30 comments were received:

  • (2) yes without changes
  • (20) maybe/yes with slight modifications
    • (3) place an Optional Teacher Workday on Monday, January 5
    • (3) remove the Optional Teacher Workday on Monday, December 22
    • (5) either remove all Early Release Days from the calendar or place them on Fridays
    • (1) remove all Workdays from the calendar to end school earlier
    • (3) start school on Monday
    • (2) take Good Friday off
    • (4) swap the August 22 and 25 mandatory and protected workday designations, as well as June 11 and 12
  • (8) asked questions, made comments (versus a request) or requested the following adjustments:
    • (1) observe President’s Day
    • (1) no inclement weather make up days during Spring Break
    • (1) observe Veteran’s Day on Mondays only
    • (1) more workdays in October

RECOMMENDATION:  Administration recommends that the calendar be approved with swapping the August 22 and 25 mandatory and protected workday designations, as well as June 11 and 12.  This would allow continuity for those who wish to take annual leave on the Protected Workdays (August 22 and June 12).  The revised calendar is attached.
