RE:

Student Suspension Support – New Light Baptist Church Program

Guilford County Schools staff and representatives from New Light Baptist Church have developed a program that will reduce student suspensions and improve staff and student relations.

The program outline is as follows:

New Light At Risk Intergenerational Outreach Program (NARIOP)
and
Guilford County Schools (GCS)
Partnership Framework

Purpose of Program:  The purpose of this program is designed to benefit high school students who have been suspended from school through counseling/encouragement, educational enrichment, anger/conflict resolution, and community agency involvement.

Program Outcomes:  To reduce the number of students who have recurring suspensions from school.

Evaluation of Program:  The program will be evaluated based on the rate of improvement with school suspensions.

Program Curriculum:  The program will utilize the Guilford County Schools curriculum to ensure that students remain on schedule with their regular school work. Each sending school will have the responsibility of forwarding students work to NARIOP to ensure consistency.

Program Operation: The hours of operation will be from 8:30 – 3:30 Monday – Friday beginning in February 2007.  The program will honor all Guilford County scheduled holidays and breaks.   The NARIOP has the ability to work with students outside of the scheduled operation hours as deemed necessary by the parents and NAIROP site administrators.

Program Staff:  NARIOP will have the responsibility to staff the program to support the needs of the students served.  As requested and if the need can be met, GCS will provide instructional support staff to assist students.

Program Selection:  NARIOP will accept between 30-45 students who have been suspended into the program.  Students will be referred to NARIOP by the sending school principal. The school will have the responsibility to make recommendations to NARIOP of students who would benefit from the program.

Transportation Services:  Each family has the responsibility to provide transportation for their child to arrive at the NARIOP site.

Program Resources:  Guilford County Schools will provide software for computer aided instruction to support students at the NARIOP site.
