RE:

Approval of Proposed 2009-10 Academic Calendar

Pursuant to direction provided by the board during its November 13, 2008 meeting, public comment was received regarding the two 2009-10 school calendar options.

A total of 24 comments were received online:

  • Twelve preferred Option 1
  • Ten preferred Option 2
  • Two were neutral

Prior to the public comment period, the District Relations Department received 30 comments from individual teachers or groups of teachers:

  • Nineteen preferred Option 1
  • Eleven voted for Option 2

In addition, the leadership committee of the Guilford County Association of Educators (GCAE) voted overwhelmingly at its November meeting to endorse Option 2 with an amendment that moves the November 3 workday to Monday, January 4, 2010. They believe teachers do not need November 3 off because it is not a major election year.

RECOMMENDATION:  The administration recommends that the board approve the revised version of Option 2 for the 2009-10 Academic Calendar. Under this option, the November 3 workday would shift to Monday, January 4, 2010. The administration is also recommending this option because it designates Good Friday as a holiday. In Option 1, Easter Monday is a holiday. Further, the administration recommends that under this option snow make-up days 6 and 7 (June 14 and 15) be switched with snow make-up days 8 and 9 (March 29 and 30). The vacation days on March 29 and 30 will remain in place, however. By moving two snow days to March, we will preserve instructional time prior to the state testing period.

Attachment #1 - Option 1
Attachment #2 - Option 2
Attachment #3 - Revised Option 2
