Retired Teacher Honored with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine

Marsha Morrell Sarvis, a retired teacher at Gateway Education Center, received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian honor. State Superintendent June Atkinson presented Sarvis with the certificate, and recognized her for 30 years of dedicated teaching to the state.

Sarvis, who spent the last eight years at Gateway, began her teaching career shortly after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1978. She spent 11 years with the Guilford County Developmental Disabilities and another 11 years at the Governor Morehead School in the Division of Health and Human Services before joining Gateway as a teacher of vision-impaired and multi-disabled students.

Vicki Simmons, an adapted physical education teacher at Gateway, nominated Sarvis for the special honor.
