We have attached three options for the Board of Education to consider tonight.
The first, titled Option 1, is the proposed calendar the board discussed at its last meeting and placed online for public comment. This calendar was developed to do four things: 1) keep all snow or make-up days within the June 10th deadline; 2) create more equity in terms of instructional days between first and second semester; 3) shorten winter break; and, 4) move more snow or make-up days to second semester to accommodate typical weather patterns.
The second, titled Revised Option 1, switches the protected workday on June 14 with the mandated workday on June 11, in keeping with state statutes mandating a protected teacher work day at the end of each grading period. In this option, June 10 is the end of the fourth grading period.
The third, titled Option 2, revisits the original academic calendar for 2009-10 approved by the Board of Education and moves more snow days into Spring Break. This option includes 11 potential snow days, including three that fall after June 10. This option was developed after receiving the following feedback online during the public comment period on Option 1. A total of 107 comments were received:
- 20 were in favor of the proposed calendar Option 1
- 87 opposed
The majority of concerns regarding the proposed calendar Option 1 included:
- A shorter winter break
- The presence of optional teacher workdays during spring break
- Clustering workdays during the second semester of the school year
- Insufficient teacher preparation time prior to the beginning of the school year
RECOMMENDATION: The Board may approve the revised Option 1 calendar now, or it may post the new Option 2 calendar for public comment from April 8 through April 21, and then vote on a final calendar (using either of these two options only) at its regularly scheduled meeting on April 23.
