RE:

Approval to Submit Application for Parent University Development Grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in partnership with the Department of District Relations of Guilford County Schools, is seeking board approval to apply for a grant from the Education Research Program, Early Childhood Programs and Policies, Goal 2 Development and Feasibility, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, to support the development of the Parent University, beginning with families of children transitioning into kindergarten in GCS. The Parent University is an initiative in the district’s strategic plan.

This grant would support the planning process for the Parent University initiative, which will include input from a variety of parents, existing community organizations and university and district employees. The district will continue to research additional grant and private funding opportunities for other aspects of Parent University. Although this particular grant is for early childhood programs, Parent University will be designed to support the parents of students in grades pre-K through 12.

The grant program provides funding of approximately $500,000 each year for three years (2010-2013) to universities who partner with school districts to conduct intervention development activities. No district matching funds are required.

RECOMMENDATION:  The administration recommends that the Board of Education grant approval to the GCS District Relations Department and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to submit to the U.S. Department of Education an application for a Parent University Development Grant.
