American Express Check Presentation

American Express representatives will present Guilford County Schools with a check for $15,000. This donation is a grant to fund Project SERVICE (Students Experiencing Real Value in Community Effort), which GCS will implement in the 2009-10 school year.

Project SERVICE will involve approximately 1300 students in grades six through eight in two middle schools. Social studies teachers at these schools will integrate service learning into their curricula, making community service a value and an expectation that becomes the norm. Volunteers from American Express will work with students on service projects. In addition, American Express volunteers will visit students in their social studies classrooms to share their experiences in the community.

This project and the generous grant from American Express that addresses character development, which is one of the focus areas in the GCS Strategic Plan. Project SERVICE will serve as a model for the adoption of a district-wide student-service requirement to educate the whole child.
