STAFF REPORTS

Report on Opening Day of School

Staff reported a successful and efficient opening to the 2005-06 school year. The first day began with 65,101 students enrolled and all teaching positions filled. Enrollment is expected to increase during the beginning days of school and reach the projected level of 68,620 students . Schools reported that facilities were clean and ready for students to begin the year, and school staff also reported that parents were actively involved with helping students make the transition into the new academic year.

Redistricting Plans

At the Board's request, staff presented a draft, working plan to create a dedicated magnet school at Andrews High and to create two attendance zones, around High Point Central and Southwest High, that would accommodate all high school students in High Point not attending the magnet school. The plan was presented as an option for the Board to consider, however, no motion was made on the plan.

The Board announced three dates to receive public input on redistricting: Thursday, September 15 at Northeast High; Tuesday, September 20 at Penn-Griffin Middle; and Tuesday, September 27 at Northwest High. Each meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
