Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology Program Highlights

The Heavy Equipment And Transport Technology (HEATT) College Tech Prep Program is sponsored by Guilford County Schools and area businesses who offer high tech, rewarding career opportunities at construction, heavy truck, marine, diesel engine, industrial truck, and farm equipment dealerships-as well as with contracting, aggregates, utility, supplier, and trucking companies that operate heavy trucks and equipment.

Technicians in this industry diagnose and repair engines, power-trains, electrical and electronic computer controlled systems, fuel systems, hydraulics, pneumatic systems, and undercarriage and suspension systems used on heavy equipment, trucks, buses, and tractors.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • Continue your education by pursuing a degree through a two or four-year institution.
  • Understand the variety of globally recognized technical certifications available and position yourself to receive them.

  • Prepare to obtain national industry-standard certifications. (ASE)
  • Learn valuable skills through an optional paid apprenticeship program while still in high school.
  • Have the option of continuing the apprenticeship program on a full-time basis after high school or part-time while completing a two or four-year degree program.

WHAT IS HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY APPRENTICESHIP?

Students enrolled in the HEATT College Tech Prep course of study have the option of applying for an apprenticeship position. Apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with on-the-job work experience as students balance theory and study with hands-on interaction using state-of-the-art technology.

If selected for a position with one of the sponsoring businesses, students may be eligible to receive elective course credit for their apprenticeship training. Students can prepare for exciting job opportunities and continue their education in the advanced HEATT program at Guilford Technical Community College.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE TECH PREP APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?

Students who are at least 16 years of age and enrolled in this College Tech Prep course of study have the option of applying for an apprenticeship position. The requirements are:

  • Have an interest in the HEATT field.
  • Earn and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 with emphasis on the courses leading to HEATT careers.
  • Maintain a good attendance record.
  • Enroll in and complete courses listed in the HEATT College Tech Prep course of study.
  • Complete an application and interview with sponsoring businesses. (Some businesses may require a criminal records check, drug screening and fingerprinting prior to employment.)

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students completing a Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology College Tech Prep course of study are eligible to apply for the College Tech Prep Tuition Assistance Scholarship at GTCC.
