Information Technology Program Highlights

"One million open positions by the year 2003!" This quote, provided by the Department of Commerce, shows the vital role technology provides and will continue to demand in the marketplace. IT, or information technology, represents a large, rapidly growing field rich with a variety of career opportunities and salary potentials. The IT College Tech Prep program, open to high school students in Guilford County, provides motivated and aggressive students a pathway to exciting career opportunities and a foundation for higher education.

Upon graduation, students who complete this two-year program equip themselves with the training needed to secure a position with a promising career path. This program also affords students the opportunity to advance their education at a two or four-year institution.

  • Learn valuable skills through a paid apprenticeship program while still in high school.
  • Have the option of continuing their apprenticeship program on a full-time basis after high school or part-time while completing a two or four-year degree program

WHAT IS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES APPRENTICESHIP?

This program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job experience as students balance theory and study with hands-on interaction using state-of-the-art technology.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE TECH PREP APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?

Students who are at least 16 years of age and enrolled in this College Tech Prep course of study have the option of applying for an apprenticeship position. The requirements are:

  • Have an interest in the Information Technology field.
  • Earn and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 with emphasis on the courses leading to IT careers.
  • Maintain a good attendance record.
  • Enroll in and complete courses listed in the Information Technology College Tech Prep course of study. These courses follow four career cluster pathways:
    • Network Systems - Hardware and Software Support
    • Information and Support Services
    • Programming and Software Development
    • Interactive Media
  • Complete an application and interview with sponsoring businesses. (Some businesses may require a criminal records check, drug screening and fingerprinting prior to employment.)
