Electrical Technology Program Highlights

The College Tech Prep Electrical Technology Program is sponsored by the Guilford County Schools in conjunction with Guilford Technical Community College, area electrical contractors and the Carolinas Electrical Contractors Association. The purpose of the program is to offer students in grades 9 - 12 a program of study that will help them prepare for a variety of careers in the electrical field.

Students learn the basics of electricity, wiring, and design and combine classroom instruction with hands- on application. These experiences will enable students to prepare themselves for career opportunities in technical fields and/or further education in two-year or four-year degree programs.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • Continue your education by pursuing a degree through a two or four-year institution.
  • Understand the variety of globally recognized technical certifications available and position yourself to receive them.
  • Prepare for a career in a rapidly growing field.
  • Prepare to obtain national industry-standard certifications. (Wheels-of-Learning)
  • Learn valuable skills through an optional paid apprenticeship program while still in high school.
  • Have the option of continuing the apprenticeship program on a full-time basis after high school or part-time while completing a two or four-year degree program.

WHAT IS ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIP?

This program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job work experience as students balance theory and study with hands-on interaction using state-of-the-art technology

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE TECH PREP APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?

Students who are at least 16 years of age and enrolled in this College Tech Prep course of study have the option of applying for an apprenticeship position. The requirements are:

  • Have an interest in the Electrical Technology field.
  • Earn and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 with emphasis on the courses leading to Electrical careers.
  • Maintain a good attendance record.
  • Enroll in and complete courses listed in the Electrical Technology College Tech Prep course of study.
  • Earn a C or better in:
    • Algebra I
    • Electrical Trades I
    • Electrical Trades II
  • Complete an application and interview with sponsoring businesses. (Some businesses may require a criminal records check, drug screening and fingerprinting prior to employment.)

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students completing an Electrical Technology College Tech Prep course of study are eligible to apply for two years free tuition at GTCC through the CTP Tuition Assistance Scholarship.
