Health Sciences Program Highlights

The Guilford County Schools in conjunction with Guilford Technical Community College, and area Health Care providers, sponsor the College Tech Prep Health Sciences Program. The purpose of the program is to offer students in grades 9 – 12 a program of study that will help them prepare for a variety of careers in the Medical field.  Students learn the patient care and medical terminology and combine classroom instruction with an internship in a health care setting.  This enables students to prepare for certification as a Nurse Assistant and provides the foundation for further education in a two-year or four-year degree program in the medical field.

WHAT IS HEALTH SCIENCES APPRENTICESHIP?

The College Tech Prep Health Sciences apprenticeship program is a two-part program consisting of classroom instruction and work-site learning experiences, which are supervised and directed by skilled professionals in the Health Care field.  Student work hours and learning experiences are closely monitored insuring that the prescribed skills for the chosen Health career are mastered and certified by the North Carolina Department of Labor.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE HEALTH SCIENCES APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?

Students who are at least 17 years of age and enrolled in this College Tech Prep course of study have the option of applying for an apprenticeship position. The requirements are:

• Have an interest in the Health Sciences Field
• Earn and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 with emphasis on the courses leading to Health Sciences careers.
• Maintain a good attendance record.
• Enroll in and complete courses listed in the Health Sciences College Tech Prep course of study.
• Complete an application and interview with sponsoring businesses. (Some businesses may require a criminal records check, drug screening and fingerprinting prior to employment.)

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students completing a Health Sciences College Tech Prep course of study are eligible to apply for two years free tuition at GTCC through the College Tech Prep Tuition Assistance Scholarship.
