The District Relations Department of Guilford County Schools is responsible for planning and executing the district’s communication and public relations efforts. We work closely with the Board of Education, the Superintendent and all GCS departments to support the district’s mission, vision and goals through effective communication strategies targeting all internal and external audiences.
While working collaboratively as a unit, the department includes six areas of focus and uses the best mix of these areas to tell the district’s stories:

Media Relations

  • Serves as the district’s liaison to all local and national media
  • Communicates district news and events to media
  • Pro-actively and strategically seeks media exposure for district areas of emphasis
  • Writes opinion/editorial articles for senior staff and Board of Education
  • Coordinates crisis communication

Community Partnerships

  • Engages community and business groups to form partnerships on the school and district level
  • Plans and manages all district-wide events
  • Strategically communicates district news/events to various community segments
  • Pro-actively seeks speaking opportunities in the community for district senior staff
  • Serves as liaison to the PTA Council, Enrichment Fund, Guilford Education Alliance, High Point and Greensboro Chambers and other community organizations

Publications

  • Writes and produces key district publications such as the annual report, school/department brochures, “Building Futures” construction newsletter and annual magnet newspaper insert
  • Ensures consistency of GCS brand on all district-level publications/materials

Internal Relations

  • Writes/produces monthly employee newsletter
  • Writes talking points for GCS senior staff and Board of Education
  • Maintains and seeks out new partners for “Employ Express” discounts list

Video Production

  • Manages/programs district cable access channel
  • Produces video news stories for GCSTV 2 and ABC 45
  • Assists district departments with video production
  • Directs live Board of Education meeting for GCSTV 2

Web

  • Maintains district Web site, ensuring accuracy of information and consistency with GCS brand
  • Works with district departments to produce Web pages
  • Seeks new ways of disseminating GCS information via the Web
