Volunteer of the Month (October 2007)

Wanda CornellGuilford County Schools Announce Wanda Cornell as April Volunteer of the Month

Does she wear a cape? Can she fly through the air? Can she pick up buildings with one arm? You be the judge as you follow her during a day of volunteering at Alderman Elementary. Who is this super hero? None other than Wanda Cornwell, the October Volunteer of the Month for GCS.

Wanda arrives at 10 a.m. each morning and works until 5 p.m., five days a week including teacher work days. Wanda has kept this schedule for seven years with the second grade classes at Alderman. She not only encourages students with her positive attitude, but she also makes sure they have all the supplies they need during the day. It is not unusual for Wanda to buy lunches for her students or to give them money for field trips.

Students are her top priority and somehow she manages to sandwich in additional activities for the school such as working PTA nights, book fairs, fall festivals and parent night, to name a few. Wanda goes to ball games and birthday parties to cheer on her students. She is respected and loved by students and staff for her help, caring and support of young lives. To everyone at Alderman, she is a superhero!

As Volunteer of the Month, Cornwell will receive a $25 gift card from American Express, which has partnered with GCS to support the volunteer recognition program. Her photo will hang at the district’s three main offices during the month of October. In addition, the Guilford County Board of Education will recognize her at its October 9 meeting.
