Recycling Facts

Americans use more than 67 million tons of paper per year, or about 580 pounds per person.

Time and money is saved from each school with a proper recycling program. Cuustodians can spend less time handling trash and will be free to accomplish other tasks. Schools that include custodians in the recycling program spend less time overall on trash removal. This is especially true with paper recycling programs since containers need not be collected everyday.

Programs that rely upon students and teachers without requiring additional staff time can pay for themselves and result in reduced disposal costs for the school district.

Recycling, including composting, diverted 64 million tons of material away from landfills and incinerators in 1999, which is up from 34 million tons in 1990.
