Battle of the Books Club
Join us for Summer Book Club Discussions in the Media Center
Welcome! Here is some background to help you understand how Battle of the Books works:
Battle of the Books is a yearly competition designed to encourage reading by all Fourth and Fifth grade students. Librarians from the North Carolina School Library Media Association choose a list of books for students to study. Students prepare for a question and answer "quiz bowl" with other elementary school teams.
A team of no more than 12 students will represent E. P. Pearce Elementary School in the spring at the Guilford County Schools competition. Last year's event was held at UNC-G..
The club is open to all 4th and 5th grade students. Students will be asked to read a couple of books a month and create questions about those books. At a monthly meeting, the books will be reviewed and discussed. As the time of the competition gets closer, students will meet more often to get familiar with the "quiz" format. Since no more than 12 students can represent the club, some students may not be able to go to the competition. That decision will be made by the advisors based on participation throughout the year and knowledge of the books.
Our number one goal throughout the experience is for the students to enjoy themselves. Everyone had a great time last year. All of our Fourth graders who participated are eager to get started again as Fifth graders.
