Volunteer Opportunities Abound at Grimsley!
Whether you have one hour a year or one day a week, you can be a part of making Grimsley a better place! Volunteering is a great way to become familiar with the school, meet other parents, and let your student know you care about his or her school. If you would like to become involved with any of the activities below, you may complete and return the Volunteer Sign-Up Form located on this web site, contact the person listed below or, if no name is listed, contact PTSA President Melanie Rodenbough (370-4047 or melabo@triad.rr.com).
Note: an asterisk * means that this is a PTSA Committee that may need members and/or leadership, as well as the specific help that is requested.
Beautification*:
If you see something blooming at Grimsley, chances are a Beautification Committee volunteer is responsible. (If you have a Boy or Girl Scout take note: improving the Grimsley grounds makes for a great Eagle or Gold Project). This PTSA Committee needs members who enjoy gardening and yard work. Additionally, two specific ways to help without serving on the committee:
- “Tool Guys” (or Gals) – we need a dozen or so Dads (or Moms) with Tools who can come two or three times a year to our Work Days. Students often help with these, but we need adults to keep them busy and provide hand tools. We also need power tools – blowers, weed-eaters, etc. Contact Chair Cynthia Paula (cynthia.paula@poloralphlauren.com) if you can be one of our Tool Guys!
- Pick a specific bed or spot on the campus to be responsible for maintaining – weeding, planting, and mulching to keep attractive. Contact the Chair and she will help you find a place to call yours.
Counseling Office and Attendance Office:
These offices can’t function without regular volunteers. Please contact Linda Hiatt (lhr@triad.rr.com) if you would like to commit to a certain day of the week or month and a certain time slot.
Dances:
The PTSA Grade Representatives work together to coordinate ‘coat check’ duty at the three major dances each year. (Dances are chaperoned by Grimsley staff). They need parents to help in two-hour shifts. Contact Nancy Winborn (nwinborn@triad.rr.com) or Leslie Webb (leswebb1@aol.com) to sign up. Dances are usually from 8pm to midnight; the dates for dances in 2010-2011 are:
- Sat., Oct. 30 (Homecoming)
- Sat. Feb. 12 (TWIRP)
- Sat. May 7 (Prom)
Hospitality*:
For those who like to cook and provide other “treats” the Hospitality Committee might be ideal. The chairs organize meals and refreshments for our deserving faculty several times a year, and they need a fleet of volunteers upon whom they can call for help. The staff comes to know and love the parents who take this task to heart! If you would like to be a part, contact one of this year’s co-chairs:
Susan Lang (sglrollingwood@bellsouth.net), Wendy Massey (wkmassey@triad.rr.com), or Randi Semon (rlsemon@yahoo.com)
Media Center:
The Media Center has a regular rotation of volunteers. Contact the Media Center volunteer coordinator, Cheryl Pratt cpratt@triad.rr.com
Proctoring:
Volunteers are needed several times during the year to proctor standardized tests. Contact our testing coordinator, Beth Hill (marshs@gcsnc.com) if you have one morning or several to give throughout the school year.
Project Graduation*:
Are you more of a single-project volunteer? Consider helping with Project Graduation. Project Graduation is an all night, alcohol- and drug-free celebration we organize for the night of graduation in order to help our seniors celebrate their success in a safe, but fun-filled environment. Since many seniors' parents have out-of-town guests, and many seniors would prefer to celebrate without their parents being present, we rely heavily on the participation of parents of underclassmen. Please help us keep this tradition alive by volunteering for one of the many jobs during the night. Parent volunteers usually have as much fun as the kids and keep coming back year after year.
Watch for publicity and volunteer needs, or contact Roe Gray (roegray@triad.rr.com) or Bev Hill (hillsfour@earthlink.net)
The PTSA Board needs fresh faces and new ideas year in and year out. The Board is composed of Officers, Committee Chairs, and various Representatives. See the PTSA Roster and PTSA Board Responsibilities elsewhere on this web site to get an idea of the different ways you can become involved. If you’d like to serve, contact the Nominating Chair or Melanie Rodenbough.
