April 30, 2013 Construction Update

Installation of the thermoplastic roofing membrane at Hairston-Falkener Autism Classroom Building is nearing completion. Installation of roof top HVAC units is underway, and the contractor has begun hanging drywall.

At High Point Central, the project architect reported to staff that the floor of the existing second floor weight room had sustained damage and recommended that the class be relocated until a structural analysis could be completed. Staff has worked with the school to relocate the weightlifting class to the rear addition wrestling room. Next steps will be to abate the area, conduct a structural analysis, prepare a design and issue a change to KMD Construction for repair of the floor. Meanwhile, the contractor continues to install ceiling grid and finishes in the lower east wing and constructing masonry partition walls in the lower west wing.

The Grimsley High School cafeteria addition is nearly ready for occupancy. Final cleaning and equipment tests are underway in the interior, and the landscaping contractor has begun installation of plantings on the exterior. Conversion of the construction retention pond to a bio cell is underway, and the new parking and drive is prepped and ready for paving.

During the April 16 Board of Education meeting, a construction contract for Allen Jay Middle School – A Preparatory Academy was awarded to Shelco, Inc., and the contract is in the process of being executed.

A pre-bid meeting for Phase 1 Early Site package at George C. Simkins, Jr. Elementary School is scheduled for 2pm, May 7, in the Eugene St. PTA room. Comments from Authorities Having Jurisdiction are being incorporated into the bid documents by the architect.

Work continues moving forward on the autism wing at Ragsdale High School. The roof has been dried in, and installation of windows is underway. Drywall finishes have begun in the administration areas, and grading of the new bus parking is underway.  HVAC, electrical and roofing package bids for the HVAC and roofing project at Ragsdale High School that were not able to be opened on April 23 are scheduled to be received Wednesday, May 1.
