Types of Referrals

Each school determines the specific functions for which the IST will be responsible. Potential functions include:

Academic or behavioral concerns

  • The IST process is completed on any referral that may eventually be referred to an IEP Team for a psycho-educational evaluation or speech-language evaluation to determine initial eligibility for EC services.

AD/HD referrals

  • The IST process is completed on any referral where a physician or parent requests information about behaviors that are characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity.

504 Referrals

  • The IST process is completed on any referral where a determination of whether Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is appropriate for a student.

Referrals for school-based alternative education programs

  • The IST process can be completed to help determine appropriateness of alternative education programs like school-within-a- school and behavior improvement classes.
