Recognition
2009 Arts Educator of the Year and Finalists

The board recognized the 2009 Arts Educator of the Year Lawrence “Andy” Mock, music specialist at Jefferson Elementary, and the two finalists, Dena Adams, choral director at Northwest Middle, and Lisa Woods, art teacher at Weaver Academy.


Consent Agenda
The board approved the following items on the consent agenda:

  • Personnel Action Reports
  • 2008-09 Budget Amendments/Transfers Report
  • Randleman Dam Feeder Main Water Easement Request – Sumner Elementary School


Staff Reports
Construction Update

Leo Bobadilla, chief operations officer, presented to the board an update on the district’s construction projects.


2008 Bond Project/Program Management Support Services
The board approved to authorize staff to negotiate contracts with Arcadis G&M of North Carolina, Inc. to provide Project/Program Management Support Services for 2008 Bond Projects as presented by Leo Bobadilla, chief operations officer.


Proposed Changes for GCS Newcomers School
The board approved changes to be implemented for the GCS Newcomers School at the start of the 2009-10 school year as presented by Dr. Beth Folger, chief academic officer, and Jake Henry, GCS Newcomers School principal. The school will operate on a traditional 180-day academic calendar with an instructional day of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allow over-age ninth-graders the option to remain enrolled at the school for more than one year.


Proposed Opt-Out Schools
Dr. Barbara Zwadyk, interim chief curriculum and organizational development officer, presented to the board a recommendation to approve an additional 10 Title I schools as opt-out options for the 2009-10 school year.


Approval of Proposed 2009-10 Non-Traditional Calendars
The board approved the proposed 2009-10 non-traditional calendars for Extended Year - Brooks Global Studies and Johnson Street Global Studies; Year-round - Hampton Leadership Academy and Oak Hill Elementary; Middle Colleges and Academy - The Middle College at Bennett, The Middle College at NC A&T, The Academy at Smith, The Middle College at GTCC-High Point, The Middle College at GTCC-Greensboro and The Middle College at GTCC-Jamestown; The Early College at Guilford; Greensboro College Middle College and Washington Montessori.

The board also approved calendar waivers for the following schools: Brooks Global Studies, Johnson Street Global Studies, The Middle College at Bennett, The Middle College at North Carolina A&T, The Academy at Smith, Greensboro College Middle College, The Early College at Guilford and Washington Montessori.


Revised 2009-10 Academic Calendar

The board approved the revised 2009-10 academic calendar (option 1) as presented by Lekan Oguntoyinbo, district relations officer. The calendar will allow the final school day for students to be June 10 in the event of missing up to seven days of school due to inclement weather. Members of the public have an opportunity to comment on option 1 for 11 days.


Strategic Plan: Regionalization (Geographic Regions)
The board approved option four for the regionalization (geographic regions) of central administration as presented by Lewis Ferebee, instructional improvement officer on special assignment.


Budget Update
Sharon Ozment, chief financial officer, presented to the board an update on the budget.


Board Discussion
Second Reading – Policy JCDB, Student Dress Code
The board approved Policy JCDB, Student Dress Code.


Jamestown Middle
The board approved for the chairman to exercise its options on property to be used for Jamestown Middle, including the following:

  • Approximately .7 of an acre owned by Arnold and Loretta Hethcox at 201 Arrowood Lane at a cost of $17,000 and about .46 of an acre on 203 Arrowood Lane at $15,600.
  • Approximately .46 of an acre owned by Larry and Brenda Craven at 205 Arrowood Lane at a cost of $15,600
  • Approximately .46 of an acre owned by Jerry W. and Deborah S. Steele at 207 Arrowood Lane at a cost of $15,600

The approval is subject to the following conditions:

  • Successful rezoning of property for use as a school
  • Seeking and obtaining approval of county commissioners of the prices to be paid for the real property pursuant to N.C.G.S. 115C-426 (f)

 

Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
