Project Overview:

Energy WISE (Wisdom Is Saving Energy and the Environment) is a program originally developed by the Kenton County School District with foundational support from the NEED organization. The program is structured but flexible enough to let teachers and students take energy conservation initiatives as far as they can imagine.

Each of the participating schools in our district will form an Energy WISE team. Each team will include an administrator, a custodian, one or two teachers and five to ten students. The emphasis is on the students, who will lead the charge.

At every participating school, the Energy WISE program will involve the following:

  1. Assessment, Awareness, Education, and Monitoring: At the beginning of the school year, each energy team will conduct an unannounced audit to assess its school’s energy consumption habits. The team will then use posters, assemblies, announcements, etc. to teach responsible energy consumption behaviors to all students and staff. The team will monitor the effectiveness of these educational initiatives by conducting regular follow-up audits. The results of these audits will be recorded and shared.
  2. Sharing and friendly competition: Energy teams will document the educational initiatives they bring to their schools and communities. The resulting records will be shared with other schools and with interested organizations outside of our district. In addition, each school will have its utility bills ranked against those of other schools based on year-over-year percent reductions. Special recognition and awards will be given to top performers.
  3. A chance to go beyond the school: Energy teams are encouraged and required to share results and to educate others through every step of the process (service-learning opportunities). There are local recognition opportunities for completed energy projects as well as national award opportunities for participating projects through NEED.
