2010-2011 AYP Results

Dear Reedy Fork Family,

The preliminary results for how our students performed on End-of-Grade/End-of-Course (EOG/EOC) testing and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) are now available.

Reedy Fork Elementary School received a composite score of 68.4 percent on EOGs.

This was an increase of 2.3 points over last year. We are very proud of our students for this accomplishment.

Along with EOG/EOC results, GCS released preliminary AYP results. AYP is a federal requirement under No Child Left Behind. To make AYP, schools must meet all of their targets in reading and math. Our school had 25 AYP targets to meet this year. We met 15 out of 25 targets, which means we did not make AYP. In Guilford County Schools, 29 out of 117 schools made AYP.

It was harder for schools to make AYP this year, because the proficiency targets for reading and math increased, meaning all of our students had to score much higher. The targets increase every three years. The final target required by No Child Left Behind is 100 percent proficiency by 2014.

AYP is all or nothing. If a school misses only one target in reading or math, it does not make AYP. In the GCS Strategic Plan, the academic goals focus on raising proficiency on EOGs and EOCs and increasing graduation rates, not on the number of schools that make AYP.

According to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, it is likely that 82 percent of schools across the country will not make AYP this year and as a consequence would be labeled as “failing.” The Guilford County Board of Education has joined the National School Boards Association and the American Association of School Administrators in signing a resolution asking for relief from sanctions since the law is three years overdue for reauthorization.

As a result of our school becoming a Title I school this year, we will have lower class sizes to better meet the needs of our students. In addition, we will have reading and math specialists to help our students meet grade level requirements. We have increased our literacy time to 150 minutes this year to increase reading fluency and comprehension. In math, we will continue to reinforce fluency of math facts and problem solving.

Also, thank you to our students for their hard work, and thank you to our staff for helping our students achieve success. We must also thank our parents and community partners for their continued support throughout the school year. It takes all of us working together to meet our academic goals. I’m looking forward to how we can continue to grow our students during our next school year.
