 GCS schools continued to make strong academic growth in 2011, with one in three schools placing in the top categories designated by the state: Honor Schools of Excellence, Schools of Excellence and Schools of Distinction. - 14 schools were named Honor Schools of Excellence and Schools of Excellence, the highest two categories recognized by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. The schools in both categories had 90 to 100 percent of students earning passing scores and had expected or high growth. Of the 14, 13 are Honor Schools of Excellence, and one is a School of Excellence. We've surpassed the Strategic Plan goal of five.
- 29 schools were named Schools of Distinction, with 80 to 90 percent of students proficient and meeting expected or high growth. There were 22 in 2010. This surpasses the Strategic Plan goal of 20.
- 47 schools were considered Schools of Progress, with expected or high growth and 60 to 79 percent of students proficient. There were 45 in 2010.
- The number of priority schools decreased from 25 in 2010 to 16 in 2011. Priority Schools are those that have fewer than 50 percent passing scores but made expected or high growth, or those that did not make expected growth and had between 50 and 59 percent passing scores.
- No schools were designated as low-performing for the 2010-11 school year. This means we have achieved another very important Strategic Plan goal and have made significant progress since 2009 when there were 10 low performing schools.
