Summer Energy Management Program |
In 2011, GCS implemented an aggressive summer energy management program. The initiative involved a four-day summer work week, as well as a district-wide effort to unplug all unnecessary electric devices, adjust HVAC settings according to occupancy, curb water consumption, and turn off unneeded lights.
This was the district’s first attempt at such an extensive program, so there was a learning curve. Many thanks are due to the countless individuals across the district who made the initiative possible, from the GCS administrative team to principals, custodians, and school staff. Special thanks go out to the many staff members in our schools, administrative buildings, and Maintenance Department who worked diligently all summer to pull plugs, adjust HVAC settings, conserve water, and turn off lights whenever possible. Most of all, appreciation is due to all the GCS employees who made the four-day summer work week a success.
We are happy to report that that the energy management initiatives did translate into substantial energy savings for the district. The district's energy costs were reduced by $508,413 for the months of June, July and August 2011, during which time central offices were open 10 hours a day for four days a week.
