Policy DE - Student Meals Charge

At its June 28, 2012 meeting, the Board of Education approved the School Nutrition Charged Meal Plan to be effective with the 2012-13 school year.  During the discussions of charged meals and the proposed plan, the Board was informed of the need to revise Board Policy DE, Student Meals Charge. 

The proposed revisions bring the new charged meal plan in compliance with Board Policy.  Policy DE has been revised to read – “Therefore, no elementary or middle school student will be deprived a meal because the student forgot or lost his/her meal money.  A student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) will be responsible for repaying School Nutrition Services (SNS) for all charged meals.”

In anticipation of revising the policy, the proposed charged meal plan was posted on the district website for public comment from June 13 through June 27.  Of the 26 comments received, 22 were in support of the plan and 4 were not in favor of the plan as proposed.  Therefore, staff requests the Board forgo a second reading and an additional period of public comment.

RECOMMENDATION: Since the Board of Education approved changing its policy when it approved the Charged Meal Plan, administration recommends the Board forgo an additional public comment period and second reading, and approve Policy DE – Student Meals Charge as revised.
