Thanks to the generous ticket donations from the Greensboro
Grasshoppers and President and General Manager Donald Moore, GCS
students from across the county attended games at no cost. For many
students, it was their first time attending a professional athletic
event.
On April 14, more than 3,500 sixth-graders and students
from the High School Ahead Academy and the GCS Newcomers School attended
a game. Students from Southwest Middle sang the national anthem and
Principal of the Year Cheri Keels threw out the first pitch. More than
6,000 second-graders had an opportunity to watch America's favorite
pastime on April 27. Teacher of the Year Terri Roberts threw out the
first pitch. Students from Northern Elementary sang the national anthem
and second-grade teacher Annabelle Jones performed the song in sign
language. Students at both games participated in songs like "Take Me Out
to the Ballgame" and cheered their teachers and principals on as they
competed in promotional contests between innings.
The partnership with the Greensboro Grasshoppers
allows GCS to incorporate baseball into learning. Throughout the school
year, teachers integrate baseball into the classroom by using statistics
in math class and studying the benefits of exercise in physical
education.
