A fellow staff member called him "amazing," while another says he is a "saint." Charles Smoot goes beyond the call of duty. Serving Erwin Montessori as the lead custodian, he ensures that each hall sparkles and each student smiles. "There is not a day that goes by without someone making a positive comment about him," said Principal Deborah Parker in reference to his impact on Erwin. "He is a breath of fresh air, and he has a way of helping people achieve a better mood." Smoot spends each Saturday cleaning and even assists teachers with the school-wide science fair and talent show. "It is amazing how he is always where you need him, no matter how busy he is," said Parker.

Weekly, teachers and staff at Erwin voluntarily participate in a "Thoughts and Prayers" session. The sessions allow staff members to encourage friends or colleagues who are experiencing a difficult time in their life. Smoot is an active participant in the sessions, always willing to give or assist in any way.

With his calm demeanor, Smoot serves as an excellent role model for the young male students at Erwin. Often, Smoot is found discussing the impact of good behavior with students. "The students react positively to him on a daily basis," said Parker. In honor of his hard work and helpful spirit, Charles Smoot is the Guilford County Schools (GCS) Employee of the Month.

As Employee of the Month, Smoot was surprised with a $50 gift card from Sam's Club, who has generously partnered with GCS to support the employee recognition program. During the month of May, his photo will hang at the district's central offices and the Sam's Club on Wendover Avenue. In addition, the Guilford County Board of Education will recognize him at its May 11 meeting.
