Twenty-four students in Dr. Gassaway’s geometry class at Northwest Middle took home the top prize at the Statewide Model Bridge Building Competition sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
After winning the regional competition, the students competed in Raleigh and were scored on four categories, including a research paper, technical design, presentation to the judges and the construction of a bridge. To score the highest points for the bridge construction, students must build the lightest bridge that holds the most weight. Northwest Middle’s bridge, which was made from balsa wood, weighed only 27 grams (about five or six nickels) and held 42.5 pounds of sand. The class was only 1.5 pounds away from the record of holding the most sand.
The competition is designed to create a greater awareness of careers in transportation, construction, engineering and the services provided by the NCDOT. The competition will be featured tonight on News 14 during the 5 o’clock news and will run a feature story on Sunday.
