Cans Stack Up During Thanksgiving Food Drives

In the spirit of giving to the community, many schools in the district collected canned food during the month of November. Thousands of cans will be donated to local organizations to help feed the hungry during the holidays.
Kindergarten students at Vandalia Elementary built a wall out of the cans their school collected while learning about hunger issues in their community and what they can do to help families in need. In addition, the KidsCare Club at Vandalia received a $300 grant to provide six families with fully prepared Thanksgiving meals.
Several schools collected cans for the Greensboro Urban Ministry. Washington Elementary, The Middle College at Bennett and The Middle College at N.C. A&T teamed up to collect a total of 905 cans of food. Students at Eastern Middle collected about 1,600 cans. The Academy at Smith also collected about 1,200 cans. Foust Elementary students collected 901 cans and boxed food items.
The Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) clubs at Jackson Middle and Allen Middle collected a total of 2,045 cans. Some will be donated to the Salvation Army’s Kans for Kids campaign and others will go to the Greensboro Urban Ministry.
Pearce Elementary partnered with Lowe’s Foods in Oak Ridge to collect 1,885 cans, which will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
The Dudley High Marching Band is donating turkeys, canned goods and other food items to the residents of Ray Warren Homes. The donations will come just in time for Thanksgiving.
Shadybrook Elementary collected more than 5,400 cans for a local food bank in High Point.
