For the 88th year in a row, school districts across the nation will join forces for one cause: to raise awareness about the critical need to provide every child with a quality public education.

The salute to American Education Week kicks off on Nov. 16 at 9 a.m. at Murphey Traditional Academy and continues through Nov. 21. Guilford County Schools’ Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green, Guilford County Board of Education members and Guilford County Commissioners will attend the kick-off, which will include a performance from the Dudley High Marching Band.

Each day during the week spotlights a different aspect of school life: • Monday, Nov. 16: Open House Day • Tuesday, Nov. 17: Parents Day • Wednesday, Nov. 18: Education Support Professionals Day • Thursday, Nov. 19: Educator for a Day • Friday, Nov. 20: Substitute Educators Day

Across the district, several schools are participating in this weeklong celebration. Hunter Elementary is hosting a breakfast for parents at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday to talk about how parents can help their child be successful in school. On Friday at Hunter, students will dress as what they want to be when they grow up.

Parents are invited to visit Southeast Middle throughout the week during classes and lunch. Educational quotes will be delivered to students during daily announcements and to parents through e-mail.

These activities are part of a nationwide effort to draw attention to American Education Week's tagline, "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility." The tagline represents the National Education Association's vision of calling upon all Americans to do their part in making public schools great for every child, so that they can grow and achieve in the 21st century.
