RE:GCS Volunteer of the Month for October 2010
Something quite wonderful is happening at Gillespie Park Elementary. A new volunteer has stirred up the community and is making things happen for the students. Her name is Gwen Kelly.
Although Ms. Kelly is new to Greensboro, she has already made her mark on Gillespie. When Principal Gail Brady wanted to form an after school soccer team, Ms. Kelly quickly went to work and found businesses to donate uniforms, equipment and shoes.
Ms. Kelly approached Borders Books and now the store is donating books, gift cards and music.
She talked to the local Dollar Tree store and now food and hygiene supplies come non-stop. Whatever the school needs, it gets.
But this is not all. Ms. Kelly is getting recorders for third and fourth-grade music and is working on a mobile laptop lab for the school and benches for a peace garden so students can read outside.
So this is fair warning to the business community. Gwen Kelly is on her way to see you, and she’s really good at getting the things she needs for Gillespie Park students.
As Volunteer of the Month, American Express officials surprised Ms. Kelly with a gift bag and $25 gift card. Her photo will hang at Gillespie Park Elementary, as well as the district’s central offices. |
