RE:Request to Submit Dropout Prevention Grant for the Academy at High Point Central
The attached is an Executive Summary for a Dropout Prevention Program Grant sponsored by the North Carolina Committee on Dropout Prevention. The Guilford County Schools (GCS) Student Services Office is seeking support to apply for the Dropout Prevention Grant. The total funding request is $154,004.
This funding request is to assist in meeting Goal IA in the Guilford County School Strategic Plan: IA. Ninety percent of students will graduate from high school in four years as measured by the North Carolina cohort graduation rate (80.7 percent as of the 2009-10 school year).
The purpose of this grant is to expand upon initiatives already in place at the Academy at High Point Central (Academy) and to initiate the Futures for Kids (F4K) online career exploration tool, organize and carry out after-school tutorial and Saturday Academy tutoring sessions, re-design and promote new student orientation, develop a tutoring program for the COMPASS (Computerized Adaptive Placement Assessment & Support System) placement test to support dual enrollment at GTCC, and develop a home/school/community support plan for individual students. The 2009-10 cohort graduation rate at the Academy was 60%. Grant funding is for a period of 18 months from January 2010 through June 2011. We are seeking approval to submit the Dropout Prevention Grant application to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on August 31, 2010. We are available to address any concerns regarding this grant.
Thank you for your consideration.
RECOMMENDATION: The administration recommends that the Board of Education grant approval to submit the Dropout Prevention Grant for the Academy at High Point Central.
