RE:Attendance Zones for Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center and Gateway Education Center
Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center Education Center, a public separate setting for students with special needs, will open in August 2010. Pursuant to policy JBCC, the Board of Education shall adopt an attendance zone for Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center and Gateway Education Center. Consistent with this policy, the proposed attendance zones recognize and value diversity, use clearly defined boundaries, and serve the economic interest of taxpayers by providing services closer to the students’ residences and, therefore, more efficiently utilizing transportation dollars.
The proposed attendance zones align with directives included in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) by providing services in the least restrictive environment as close to each student’s home as possible. However, it is important to note students must first be assigned to a public separate setting through the individualized education plan (IEP) process. Once the need for a separate setting has been established, students will be assigned by the Exceptional Children Services Department to Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center or Gateway Education Center based on the board adopted attendance zones and any specific IEP requirements.
Administration will seek Board of Education approval at the May 27, 2010 board meeting.
