RE:GCS Volunteer of the Month for March 2010

Volunteer Michael Van Patter is known for spreading his love for music through the halls of the Doris Henderson Newcomers School. Creating a music club, Van Patter not only provided a place where students could learn music and how to play instruments; he also offered students opportunities to share music and lyrics that are unique to each of their cultures.

“He has so much musical talent and such a pleasant way with the students that he was able to help bring out their best musical skills,” said Teacher Leisa Huddleston in reference to Van Patter’s devotion to the students. “Thanks to him, we had our first Newcomers’ rock band.”

Through the club, Van Patter diligently worked with students before and after school to prepare a special song that was performed at the end-of-the year ceremony. To ensure the performance was a success, Van Patter provided sound equipment and support to the students during their performance.

Van Patter not only has an ear for music, but also a green thumb. At Lindley Elementary, Van Patter collaborated with the Parent-Teacher Association to create landscaping designs for the school garden. In addition, he also coordinated a group of volunteers to weed and plant flowers around the school last spring.

As GCS Volunteer of the Month, Van Patter will be surprised with a $25 gift card from American Express, which generously sponsors this recognition. In addition, his photo will hang at the district’s central offices, the Newcomers School and Lindley Elementary.
