Summer school for Guilford County Schools (GCS) high school students begins today. The program will run Mondays through Thursdays through July 29.

The high school summer school program will focus on credit recovery for Algebra I, Biology, Civics and Economics, English I and U.S. History. Additional courses may be offered at various schools based on school needs. Individual schools should be contacted to see what additional courses are available.

Summer school sites will be at all of the district’s traditional high schools. Students from the middle college high schools will attend summer school at their home school if needed.

Students were notified by their school if they should be attending the summer school program. Some schools may be offering additional summer programs for students through the support of community or faith organizations.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) department is also offering a summer program for English language learners. From July 12-28, four sites will offer instruction to students who are in their first year of school in the United States and who are going into grades three, four, five, eight or 10. During the program, students will have the opportunity to build vocabulary and oral language skills in preparation for the new school year.

Students have been identified by ESL staff to attend the program and will be attending sites in walking distance of the communities where they live. The sites for this program are Glen Haven Learning Center, Iglesia Nueva Vida and Avalon Learning Center in Greensboro, and Camp Ferndale in High Point. Two locations are sponsored by the Center for New North Carolinians.
