GCS 2012 Graduation Season Begins
| Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 |
Beginning Thursday, May 10, until June 11, nearly 4,600 students in Guilford County Schools (GCS) will graduate in 30 ceremonies.
The Early College at Guilford kicks off the 2012 graduation season with its ceremony on Thursday at 10 a.m. when the school’s 50 seniors will march through Dana Auditorium located on the college campus.
The Early College at Guilford’s graduating class boasts students like Aardra Rajendran, Thomas Lu and Christopher Wood. Aardra, who won the National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing, plans to study chemical and biomolecular engineering with a concentration in nanotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania. Thomas plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search 2012. As the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition, Thomas will compete for more than $630,000 in awards provided by the Intel Foundation.
Christopher was recognized for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award, presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Christopher, who plans to attend Davidson College, spends many hours a week volunteering at the Natural Science Museum and at the Doris Henderson Newcomers School. His band (he’s the drummer) often plays for the students.
All of The Early College at Guilford’s students will earn either the service-learning exemplary award or the district’s new service-learning diploma. This year is the first year graduates are eligible to receive the special diploma, which is awarded to students who earned at least 175 service hours.
The full 2012 graduation schedule is available on the GCS website. Ceremonies for the district’s early and middle colleges and other non-traditional high schools will take place throughout May and early June. High schools that follow the traditional academic calendar will hold graduation ceremonies June 8 through June 11 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
To ensure all ceremonies go off without a hitch, GCS asks all graduates, family members and guests to show respect for graduates by applauding politely, limiting cheers so every graduate’s name is heard and remaining seated during the ceremonies. For safety and security reasons, guests will not be allowed to bring duffel bags, backpacks, balloons, air horns or noisemakers into graduations.
School staff members and families are invited to share outstanding graduation stories with GCS by e-mailing goodnews@gcsnc.com. |
