The mission of the GCS Professional Development Department is to improve student achievement through the creation of a professional learning community that provides high quality professional development opportunities by supporting the district's strategic plan, exploring current research in education, promoting more effective teaching and learning, and fostering personal and professional growth.

The Professional Development Department of GCS oversees high quality professional development by:

  • providing workshops based on effective teaching and learning strategies;
  • ensuring that professional development reflects current research and best practices in education; and,
  • providing staff with choices of professional development activities for re-certification that tie to individual, school and district goals.

The following courses are offered through our professional development department:

GCS-PROFDEV: Reading Social Studies: Why Bother? (literacy or academic credit)

GCS-PROFDEV: Reading Strategies to Support Common Core Standards (literacy or academic credit)

GCS-PROFDEV: Does Vocabulary Affect Academic Development (literacy or academic credit)

GCS-PROFDEV: Differentiated Instruction (academic credit)

GCS-NC Teacher Evaluation Training for Peer Observers

GCS-PROFDEV: How to Help Adolescent Males Succeed in Mid/Hi Sch (academic or paraprofessional credit credit)

GCS-PROFDEV: Unique Strategies to Instruct & Motivate Elementary Boys (academic or paraprofessional credit)

Remember: 
To receive CEUs, the course must be at least 5 hours, and an Outside Event 
Request must be submitted to the Office of Professional Development.
After finishing the course, a certificate of completion must also be submitted.

Digital Literacies in the K-12 Classroom can be submitted for 1.2 Literacy CEUs.

Introduction to Data Literacy and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and 
Technical Subjects
 can be submitted together for 0.7 Literacy CEUs.


 

Did You Know?

During the 2011-2012 school year:

  • 740 GCS courses/workshops were taught;
  •   1,291 professional development sessions with a minimum of 5 hours each were offered;
  • 25,138 participants attended those course sessions; and
  •   2,475 "Outside GCS Event Requests" were processed.
