Referral Process

The IST has approximately 8-10 weeks to complete the six steps of the referral process. During the first step the teacher meets with the parent and shares concerns about the child’s academic and/or behavior problems. At the initial meeting the teacher completes the Parent Input & Social History form and obtains parent permission for IST screening. A case manager is then assigned to the teacher and the referral problem is identified. The first IST meeting is scheduled during step two and a decision is made whether to close the referral or to continue and develop the intervention plan. After obtaining the research based interventions, the interventions are implemented for 20 school days and progress monitored for effectiveness. During step four, the IST meets and discusses the effectiveness of the interventions and decides if screening is needed. At step five screenings are conducted, if needed. During the sixth and final step, the screening data is reviewed and the IST decides interventions are successful and closes the case or decides to refer the student to the IEP team.
