During the second annual Academic Awards Banquet on May 29, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students at Sedalia received red carpet treatment for making the honor roll at least three times during the year.

As the students’ names were called, teachers presented each of them with an Academic Award Medal. Honorees and their guests were also treated to a catered dinner. Weaver Academy Donates $500 to United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro

This year at Weaver Academy, the student body committed itself to serving the community. The Student Government Association (SGA), which organizes and hosts almost all of the year’s social functions, is also the host for the junior/senior prom. During one of the SGA meetings, it was proposed that in place of traditional prom favors such as key chains or candleholders, a percentage of each ticket sold should be donated to a reputable charity in the area.

A vote in favor of this suggestion was unanimous. Since Weaver is a performing and visual arts school, it was decided to donate the money to the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro. After selling more than 100 tickets, the SGA, representing each prom participant, was able to donate $500. Mr. Dow Hamblin of Weaver’s Art Department assisted the prom committee in making a huge check, which was displayed at the prom and SGA President Brynn Plummer’s announcement was met with great applause. The SGA hopes their donation will set a precedent for schools in the community, as well as for future Weaver students to consider the possibilities of proactive generosity. For more information, please contact Anna Brady, principal, at 336-370-8282.

Mendenhall Middle Steps Up to Help Ronald McDonald House

In only one month, Mendenhall students and teachers collected 99 pounds of pull-tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Durham. The Ronald McDonald House, which provides a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, works with local recycling centers to receive money for collecting the tabs from aluminum cans.
