Triangle Lake Montessori to Hold Parent Education Sessions
On Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m., Triangle Lake invites parents of rising kindergarten through fifth-grade students to parent education sessions. Multicultural Day at Guilford Elementary
To show appreciation and understanding of various cultures around the world, Guilford Elementary will hold a multicultural day on Friday, May 30 from 8:15 a.m. until 2 p.m. Throughout the day, various activities will take place including a Parade of Nations, guest speakers, dancers, music and a fashion show. Northwest High “We the People” Team Wins Southeast Regional Award
Northwest’s “We the People” team took home the Southeast Regional Award during the 21st annual “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” national finals. The Northwest group reached the national finals by placing first in the North Carolina competition.
During the competition, students served as expert witnesses, testifying on constitutional issues in a simulated congressional hearing. Students were scored on their opening statements and answers to follow-up questions by a panel of judges, who graded the students on understanding, constitutional application, reasoning, supporting evidence, responsiveness and participation. Mendenhall Middle Students Learn from Real-Life Alpacas
After studying the Andes Mountains in social studies class, students at Mendenhall had the chance to visit with an animal native to that region thanks to Dr. Alan Rosenbloom with Occumed Walk-In & Urgent Care. A farmer first and a physician second, Dr. Rosenbloom raises alpacas and recently brought two of his favorite, Rosa and Georgia, to the school. Brooks Global Studies to Host Annual International Festival
Brooks Global Studies will kick-off its annual International Festival on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium. The festival celebrates school diversity and the students’ focus on international studies throughout the year. During the school-wide assembly, faculty and staff will compete for prizes during an international costume contest.
From 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., students, parents, faculty, staff and the community are invited to attend the formal festival in the school gymnasium. There will be more than 14 passport activity areas for students to participate in and receive a passport stamp upon completion. A full passport will be exchanged for a global bag, filled with treats for each student. In addition to the passport activity, attendees will enjoy classroom presentations, reading railroad in the library, international karaoke, a silent auction and a raffle. Northern Middle to Perform for Annual Parade
The Northern Middle Nighthawks Marching Band and Predator Drumline will perform in the annual Summerfield Parade on Saturday, May 17. The Middle College at GTCC - Greensboro Students Complete Service Project
Ten ninth- through 11th-grade students from The Middle College at GTCC-Greensboro recently completed their first service project. The D.I.V.A.S. (Developing Individual Values, Attitudes and Standards) worked diligently throughout the spring to empower other young women to embrace their individuality and diversity. The students focused their direct efforts on the tutorial needs of local elementary students preparing for the End-of-Grade tests in Bluford Elementary, Erwin Montessori, Peeler Open Elementary and Vandalia Elementary. Southwest Elementary Students to Donate Quilt Project to Local Camp
Southwest fourth-grade students will soon complete three quilts to donate to Victory Junction Gang Camp, a camp for children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses . Each student designed and drew a patch featuring a race car. Parents and volunteers are currently in the process of sewing all of the patches and finalizing the quilts. Each donated quilt will be given to a camper as a keepsake of their visit. Quilt materials were purchased by the Southwest Parent Teacher Association. Jamestown Middle Students Awarded at Annual Model United Nations of the Triad
Despite being their school’s first time participating in the Model United Nations of the Triad conference, Jamestown student delegates secured the Best Delegation Award during the event on Thursday, May 1 at Guilford College. Students from throughout the county met to negotiate resolutions regarding topics such as nuclear non-proliferation, the situation in Darfur, the rights of multinational corporations and the rights of migrant workers. The conference required the 21 Jamestown students to acquire thorough understanding of the topics at hand and the positions held by the six nations they represented. Welborn Middle Recognized at Music Showcase Festival
Welborn band and orchestra students performed at the Music Showcase Festival on Friday, May 2 in Williamsburg, VA. The band received the fourth-place award and the orchestra received the first-place award in the festival, which hosted schools from across the nation. Ragsdale High Orchestra Performed with Greensboro Symphony
The Ragsdale Orchestra opened for the Greensboro Symphony on Saturday, May 3. The students were visited prior to the event by principal players of the Greensboro Symphony to discuss with students how they, as seasoned professionals, approach orchestra challenges. The students performed works by Beethoven, Brahms and a world premiere of “Chords of December” by Ryan Oldham. Sumner Elementary Visited by Carolina Panthers Junior Training Camp
Sumner second-grade through fifth-grade students hosted a Carolina Panthers Junior Training Camp on Wednesday, May 7.
