Click here to view the information sessions for those interested in becoming a Lateral Entry Teacher. |
Step 1:
Qualify |
In order for you to obtain a Lateral Entry License in the state of NC, you must meet the state’s requirements found online at: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/licensure/lateral/. If you have further questions about whether or not you qualify to obtain a Lateral Entry License, contact our Guilford County Schools licensure specialist, Tracey Dungee, at (336) 370-8967. Once hired, Guilford County Schools will facilitate the process of applying for your Lateral Entry License. |
Step 2: Application |
Once you have determined that you qualify for a license, you need to obtain a teaching position within Guilford County Schools. To do this, submit an online application at: https://schooljobs.dpi.state.nc.us/. |
Step 3:
Online Screening |
If your application is in an area where we have vacancies and if it is a good match for our current needs, you will be contacted by Guilford County Schools to take an online employment screener. Your score on this online screener will determine whether or not you proceed to Step 4: Screening Interview. It is not our policy to share online screening scores with candidates. Please do not call our office to request this information. |
Step 4: Screening Interview |
If asked to participate in a Screening Interview, you will schedule an in person or telephone interview with two of our Guilford County Schools principals. Your score on this screening interview will determine whether or not you are eligible for a position with Guilford County Schools. It is not our policy to share screening interview scores with candidates. Please do not call our office to request this information. |
Step 5:
Principal Interview |
Once you have successfully completed the Screening Interview, you can begin contacting principals about vacant positions. There are three ways to do so (in order of preference): email, telephone, in-person. The principal directory with all contact information can be found at: http://www.gcsnc.com/schools/principal_directory.htm. |
Step 6:
Clearing Your License |
Once you are hired, you have 3 years to obtain a NC Standard Professional Teaching License. There are three ways to do this:
- Affiliate yourself with a college or university licensure program. Almost all NC higher education institutions have licensure only programs.
- Submit your transcripts to a Regional Alternative Licensure Center (RALC). The RALC will prescribe a Program of Study. You may fulfill each requirement by selecting when and where to take each required course.
- Apply to participate in GCS ACT. This Guilford County Schools’ in-house program is likely going to be the fastest and cheapest way to become licensed. Our program is specifically designed to meet the needs of a lateral entry teacher and is delivered by our best faculty! For more information on this program, visit our website at: http://www.gcsnc.com/gcsact/index.htm. In order to participate in this program, you must be seeking licensure in grades 6-12 and be a first year lateral entry teacher.
