Two-Time Grammy Winner and GCS Alumnus

On Thursday night, the Board of Education recognized GCS alumnus Tony Griffey. A native of High Point, Tony has captured critical and popular acclaim on opera, concert and recital stages worldwide. The combination of his beautiful and powerful tenor voice, along with his gift for exceptional communication and excellent musicianship have earned him the highest praise, including two Grammy awards in February. Griffey attended Kirkman Park Elementary, Griffin Middle, Andrews High and High Point Central High where he graduated in 1985. A man of a humble upbringing, he still calls High Point home, and returns to lend his talent to benefit others through concerts for Open Door Ministries, Salvation Army and the High Point Area Arts Council.

Griffey, an advocate of the arts in GCS, knows how important a teacher’s relationship with a student can be. In elementary school, his music teacher recognized he had a talent and took the time to cultivate his unique gift. When accepting the board recognition, he acknowledged this relationship and others, and reiterated how important of a role the arts play in a child’s education. And of course, Griffey treated the audience to a verse of one of his award-winning songs.
