Teacher Recognized by American Red Cross for Saving a Life

Wanda Smith, a pre-K teacher at Archer Elementary, received a Certificate of Merit Tuesday from the American Red Cross for actions she took to save a student’s life last December.

When one of her students displayed signs of anaphylactic shock after eating a cookie that contained peanuts, Smith used knowledge she gained in an American Red Cross training course to administer an Epi-pen and save the student’s life.

The American Red Cross awards the Certificate of Merit as its highest honor to individuals who save a life using skills and knowledge learned in a Red Cross course.
