GCS Students Honored for Civil Rights Projects

On Wednesday, February 1, The Sit-In Movement Inc. hosted its 46th Anniversary Gala. The event honored the mark that four African American male students made on February 1, 1960 in Greensboro. The brave actions of those students ignited a sit-in movement to protest the Jim Crow segregation laws. This gala is a tribute to the legions of men, women and children of every race who have endured the battle for justice.

The event also recognized four Page High School students for their outstanding essay entries on the topic, “A Nation Beyond Black and White,” and one GTCC Middle College East student for his creative art work. The creative students received their awards during the “Youth Building Bridges Student Awards Presentations” ceremony. Receiving first place in the essay contest were: Cat McCann and Sarah Reitz. Honorable mention awards for the essay contest went to: Nathan Proctor and Katie Robinson. In addition, Alex Weatherly won first place for his art work entitled, “Icons of the Movement.” Mrs. Janet Trail, creative writing teacher at Page High School, provided insights and guidance to the four essay winners.
