Guilford County Students Selected to Attend Governor’s School

Unique Experience for Academically Gifted Students

Twenty-four Guilford County Schools’ students were selected to attend the 2006 session of the North Carolina Governor’s School this summer. The NC Governor’s School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students.

The 2006 session will be the 41st Governor’s School experience for North Carolina’s students. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in the performing/visual arts area, is located on two campuses: Governor’s School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh.

Funded annually by the General Assembly of North Carolina, the program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, State Board of Education, Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division. A Board of Governors, appointed by the State Board of Education, acts as an advisory body.

The program offers a curriculum for 800 students from across the state each summer.  Students are selected in an area of academics or performing/visual arts as their focus area. All students participate in academic classes in an environment that thrives upon the intellectual curiosity of students and faculty alike. Students take no tests and teachers do not assign grades.

Classes blend intellectual discussion with practical application of theory and of the talents of the students. Governor’s School is a six week experience during which the campuses are alive with visiting speakers, performances, exhibitions, field trips, demonstrations, optional seminars and a film series. Social and recreational events also complement the academic focus.
