The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announced that 69 educators from Guilford County Schools (GCS) have earned the profession’s top recognition by receiving the prestigious National Board Certification. With 592 teachers total, GCS ranks third among all school districts in the state for its number of National Board Certified educators.

Nationwide, 8,900 teachers achieved the certification in 2009. This achievement brings the total number of teachers who achieved National Board Certification to more than 82,000.

A symbol of professional teaching excellence, the National Board Certification acknowledges that a teacher was judged by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about students’ best interests and acts effectively on those judgments.

“We are proud of our teachers who successfully completed the National Board Certification process,” said Dr. Shirley Morrison, chief human resources officer. “These teachers worked extremely hard, and I know they will continue to do great things to help our students excel in the classroom.”

According to NBPTS, National Board Certification measures a teacher’s practice against high and rigorous standards through an extensive series of performance-based assessments, which includes teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes or DVDs and thorough analyses of the candidate’s teaching and the students’ learning.

“The Guilford County Association of Educators would like to congratulate our National Board Certified Teachers who have reached the highest level of professional development for the success of our students,” said Tijuana B. Hayes, president of the Guilford County Association of Educators.
