GCS Students Attend International DECA Conference

Students from Northwest High are attending the DECA International Career Development Conference this week in Anaheim, Calif. Jordan Mahaffey and Julie Tamborino will compete in marketing and business competitions along with about 13,000 other students.

DECA is an association of high school students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service. Students involved in DECA programs compete in local, state and international competitions that measure skills needed for business and marketing careers.

“The experience that DECA gives me is priceless,” said Mahaffey. “The conferences allow me to network with other high school marketing students.”

“To me, the competitions are important because they introduce students to a problem or situation that one might encounter in the business world,” said Tamborino. “I am able to see what I may do once I establish a career. DECA competitions are a great experience that allows high school students to show what they know and hopefully come out on top.”

In March, Maheffey and Tamborino, along with their classmates and students from Ragsdale High, Southwest High and Grimsley High, competed in the North Carolina DECA State Competition. Mahaffey earned first place in the Hotel and Lodging Management event. Tamborino was a fourth-place team member in Financial Analysis.

D’Marea Moffett, a Ragsdale senior who earned two event finalist medallions in Retail Merchandising in the state competition, encourages students to join DECA if they have the chance.

“DECA has been very helpful and influential to me as an individual,” she said. “It introduced me to marketing and opened a door of many possibilities. It made me want to take it to the next level and prepare for a career. In the fall, I will be a majoring in marketing at UNC-Pembroke.”
