The state is asking Guilford County Schools (GCS) and other North Carolina school districts to revert $41 million in funding. GCS anticipates its share of the reversion – the second this school year – will be about $2 million. In December, GCS returned $2.8 million to the state as part of a $58 million reversion.
Philip Price, chief financial officer for the Department of Public Instruction, told GCS officials the state could start adjusting its funding allotments to school districts as soon as next week.
Earlier this week, an executive order was issued by Governor Beverly Perdue mandating a 0.5 percent pay cut between now and June 30 for all state employees. In return, state employees would receive 10 hours of flexible time off.
“The economic crisis continues to engulf GCS,” said GCS Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green. “The news this week is particularly troubling, as it comes so late in the school year and we have already made significant cuts in our budget.”
Green said that public schools must remain a priority despite the economic crisis. “We can’t afford to compromise the quality of education our students receive,” said Green. “And we can’t lose sight of the fact that the students we serve are among the state’s most vulnerable population.”
District officials are meeting today to discuss how to manage the state’s latest request. Superintendent Green said he anticipates presenting information about the reversion to the Board of Education at their regularly scheduled meeting on May 12.
